There is a High Sheriff for each county in England and Wales, although the Shrieval Counties (“Shrieval” means anything to do with a Sheriff) no longer align with administrative areas, this creates a mix between the traditional counties and more recent local authority areas.

The role of High Sheriffs these days is largely ceremonial and representative. They are appointed for a year only and their work is voluntary and unpaid, except for a nominal court attendance allowance. The general expenses of the office, which can be considerable, are borne personally by the holder.
