Channel Islands

Channel Island Laws receive Royal Assent by being approved by His Majesty The King at a meeting of the Privy Council (The King in Council).

When an Island Law is first submitted for assent, it is considered by a Committee of the Privy Council known as the Committee for the Affairs of Jersey and Guernsey. Following his accession, King Charles III approved two Orders constituting the Committee; and these Orders ensure the automatic referral of any Channel Island Law or Petition to the Committee for its report.

The Orders made on 9th November 2022 provide that the Committee for the Affairs of Jersey and Guernsey will not ordinarily postpone its consideration of an Act or Law if a Petition against it is received later than 28 days after the final approval of the Act or Law by the appropriate legislature in Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney or Sark.

If, after consideration of the Law and any other related representations, the Committee reports that it is content for the proposed Law to be approved, the Law will be included in the business to be considered at the next meeting of The King in Council, with a recommendation for formal approval.
